Blogmas Day 9|Harmattan Hair Care Tips

Welcome to blogmas day 9. Hope you’re all enjoying my blogmas because I am. Which other bloggers are you keeping up with their blogmas posts?

Today I’ll be sharing some tips on how to care for your hair during the harmattan season. Harmattan season is an intensive dry weather that comes with dust and causes chapped lips, cough, catatrrh, dry skin amongst so many other things. And last but not the least, dry and brittle hair. Taking care of your hair during harmattan has to be done consciously.

Here are some tried and tested tips to get you through the harmattan season.

Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize!

You can never have too much moisture in your hair during harmattan. You have to moisturize your hair more regularly than you used to. I usually moisturize my hair every 2 days, but during harmattan, it’s essential that I do it everyday. Twice daily if I have to go out.

Deep condition regularly.

You need to step up your deep conditioning game this period. Deep condition your hair weekly or as often as your schedule would allow you. You should focus on moisture, so moisturizing deep conditioners should be used.

Increase your water intake.

Water is good for your skin and hair. You should significantly increase the amount of water you drink during harmattan season because you can easily get dehydrated.

Cowash more and shampoo less.

Cowashing can be beneficial during this period because shampoos can overly dry out your hair which we’re trying to avoid. You should still shampoo your hair to remove excessive build up, but it should be done less and with moisturizing sulphate free shampoos.

Stay away from heat.

Stay away from blow dryers, flat irons, curling wands and other heat tools. The weather is already dry enough, so you don’t need to add more external factors which would end up making your hair dry and brittle.

Massage your scalp with oil regularly.

This will prevent you from having a dry and flaky scalp. Massaging your scalp regularly would ensure increased blood circulation which encourages hair growth. Ensure that you spritz your hair lightly with warm water before oiling your scalp. This will help keep your scalp moisturized and not just oily. Here’s how to massage your scalp properly

Use butters and thick oils.

You want ditch your light oils like olive, coconut, almond oils and opt for thicker oils like castor oil or butters like shea, cocoa and mango butters. If your hair doesn’t like raw Shea butter, you can make a whipped shea butter like I usually do. The butters and thick oils would help to seal in the moisture you put in your hair and ensure that your hair is protected and doesn’t lose moisture quickly.

Avoid dust as much as possible.

Headwraps and facecaps are your bestfriends this period. They’ll help prevent dust from settling in your hair.

Wear satin bonnets.

Satin and silk are your hair’s bestfriends. Ensure that you wear a satin bonnet to sleep because it would help retain the moisture in your hair for a longer period. Also try and wear it even during the day when you’re at home.

Avoid overly using humectants.

Humectants such as honey and glycerin are great to draw in moisture from the atmosphere into the hair, but during harmattan the air is usually dry so your hair will tend to lose moisture to the atmosphere as water tends to move down it’s concentration gradient (from higher concentration to lower concentration) resulting in dry and brittle hair which is prone to breakage.

Protective styles.

If you’re like me and can’t be bothered to be have her hair out, get a protective style. That way, you’re hair is protected from direct exposure to the dry weather. It’s important that you still moisturize your hair with that protective style to prevent breakage. You can check out this protective style look book for inspiration.

Blogmas Day 8|How To Drink More Water.

Welcome to blogmas day 8.

I’m bringing you a topic that is already becoming so cliche because everybody always says to drink water, but it can actually be hard if you’ve not made it a habit. I’ll be sharing ways that can help you drink more water.

Set a goal.

Have a set amount of water you want to be able to finish everyday. When you have a definite set goal, it makes things more visible and easier to attain it.

Start Slow.

Don’t rush yourself. You can start with just a bottle of water, then gradually increase it.

Have a water bottle.

Preferably, a pretty one in your favourite colour. Your bottle should be with you all the time so you can drink regularly. You’re more likely to drink more water when you have a personal attachment to your bottle. I got a purple bottle because I love purple and I love carrying it about because then, I’m compelled to drink the water.

Make drinking water part of your routine.

Let it be one of the things you write down as part of the things you want to accomplish in a day, if you’re someone who writes down daily plans. Place it in a way that you can consciously remember to do, for example, after you use the bathroom or the first thing you do when you wake up.

Use an app or set reminders on your phone.

So you don’t forget, let your phone remind you since we always have our phone with us. An app can help you monitor your progress.

Reward yourself.

The human brain loves to be rewarded. Make a plan to reward yourself when you reach your drinking goal. Who doesn’t like being rewarded? You can buy yourself a snack or a book, or anything nice you want. Just let your brain make drinking water associated with a good feeling and not a chore.

Give your bottle time marks.

Or you get a bottle that has time marks. If you’re still having a hard time sticking to your drinking water goals, try making use of time marked bottles. It would help keep track of your progress and you’ll be encouraged to reach your goal.


How much water do you drink in a day? I drink from anywhere around 1.5 to 3litres.

Blogmas Day 7|I Almost Fought On The Road.

Welcome to blogmas day 7.

Today’s post should have been featured in my story corner but let’s have it in the blogmas cause why not?

I like to think of myself as a very calm person and someone who doesn’t like trouble but you see, Nigeria is a mad place and you have to have an ounce of madness in you to survive in Nigeria.

One evening on my way to church, I was about crossing the road at a junction and all of a sudden my hand was held back. I looked back in shock because I was surprised. I turned around and I saw it was a bus conductor. I was already irritated because I was running late because of the same bus conductors but that’s a story for another day.

So this bus conductor held back my hand and I had to stop to let him release my hands but he wouldn’t budge. I began to shout at him before he finally let go of my hand but he wouldn’t leave the way so that I could pass and unfortunately the road was narrow. There were people selling at one side and buses at the other side so the only way was to move forward or back.

Oga made an attempt to hold my hand again asking what was so special about me that he couldn’t touch. I began to shout that he shouldn’t touch me and by then people had started gathering. Unfortunately for me, they weren’t sensible people but just another bunch of crazy bus conductors. They were just laughing and gassing him up. I was so annoyed so I just stood there while he was still trying to grab my hand but I was dodging.

It was not until the passengers in the bus that he was supposed to be loading started shouting at him that he left. I almost slapped the guy on impulse when he was holding me but I knew that would be dangerous so I held myself back. When he finally left I let out my breath I didn’t know I was holding and I almost started crying because I was so angry and felt really weak.

If you people hear that I fought on the road though don’t be surprised. They’ll probably beat me up, but I’ll try my best to give a few slaps and hits😂😂.

Blogmas Day 6|The Gratitude Arena

Welcome to blogmas day 6. Happy Sunday!

This year has thought me the importance of gratitude. I’m now grateful for the very little things, or the things we take as little. Because some things we see as basic items are luxury items to some others. If you read my birthday post, you’ll see that I talked about gratitude. I started keeping a gratitude journal since my birthday and honestly, it has made me happier. I no longer take things for granted. I’ll be sharing some things I’m grateful for from my journal.

I’m grateful for the gift of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus said He’ll send the Holy Spirit to us as a comforter and teacher, it’s like he was talking to me. I really don’t know what I’ll do without the Holy Spirit. I’ve been spoiled with the good life.

I’m grateful that I can breathe fresh air without having to pay for oxygen.

I’m grateful for God’s mercies and grace upon my life.

I’m grateful for my family and friends.

I’m grateful for the provision of food and clean water.

I’m grateful for my health. That all my internal and external organs are complete and I don’t have to be placed on drugs to survive.

I’m grateful for my eyes and my glasses. In the beginning of this year my the pressure of my eyes was high and I was placed on medication to get it back to 2 to now, they’ve gotten back to a normal range and I’m very grateful.

I’m grateful for growth. In all areas of my life that I’ve grown this year, I’m grateful.

I’m grateful for a sound mind.

I’m grateful for the low points in my life.

They definitely made me stronger.

I’m grateful that I leave my house and get back home safely everyday.

I’m grateful for good music to get me through smooth and rough days.

I’m grateful for electricity.

I’m grateful for my peace of mind.

I’m grateful for every skill and talent I have.

I’m grateful that my skin has improved and I no longer have hormonal pimples.

I’m grateful that I no longer experience painful menstruation.

I’m grateful for this blog, my followers and readers. For a space to rant and share my thoughts with wonderful people.

I’m grateful for the internet.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to go to school.

I’m grateful for the addition of a child my family this year.

I’m grateful that in this global pandemic where people lost their jobs and there were so many bad news everywhere, but in my family, we have so many reasons to thank God.

I’m grateful that my grandparents are aging gracefully.

I’m grateful that I’m alive.

Blogmas Day 5|A Gift Guide For A Naturalista

Welcome to blogmas day 5.

It’s the season of giving and I’m sure you have a sister or friend with natural hair who you’re planning on getting a gift, so why not something that would be beneficial to her hair? It would be a very thoughtful gift.

I shared my Christmas wishlist in case you need an extra inspiration for gift ideas. But today, I’m bringing to you, general stuff that anybody with natural hair would love and appreciate.

Steaming Cap.

This is a very essential item when deep conditioning your hair. It makes your hair feel soft when you steam your hair with your favourite deep conditioner. It really steps up your deep conditioning game and ensures that your hair absorbs all the nutrients from your deep conditioner.

Satin Lined Hoodie.

Who doesn’t love a good hoodie? Not me. And I’m sure we know how natural hair loves satin. There are now hoodies that are lined with satin which means that you can wear a hoodie and still have your hair protected.

Satin/Silk Scarves.

Satin and silk scarves are beautiful and they’re a nice way to add accessories to your hair and also good to rescue a failed hairstyle or your go to on a lazy day.

Satin Bonnets.

Good for protecting natural hair at night and it helps to retain the moisture in the hair to leave it soft and manageable.

Scalp Massaging Brush.

I talked on the benefits of massaging your scalp here. And a massaging brush makes it so easy to do so. Plus, it doubles as a shampoo brush and can be used to scrub your scalp instead of your fingers.

Wigs/Clip in Extensions.

For when she needs a break from getting her hair done. Which can be everytime. I think I everybody deserves to own 2 or 3 wigs.

Temporary Hair Dye.

Everybody deserves to have some fun and we can have it with our hair right? Temporary hair dyes are a fun way to add colour to your hair without commiting to one colour or the stress of dealing with colour treated hair.

Essential Oils.

Everybody needs essential oils in their lives. And they’re useful for more than just haircare that’s why they’re so important.

You may still go ahead and get a complete range of hair products for that naturalista because why not?

Blogmas Day 4| Hairstyle Inspiration For Christmas

Welcome to blogmas day 4.

Dry season is upon us and it’s a perfect excuse to get that protective style saved as a screenshot in your phone. And Christmas is approaching so we need to make our Christmas hair. Is anybody too mature for Christmas hair? Not me sha.

Anyway, I’m bringing you a protective style lookbook to inspire your next hairstyle.

Knotless Braids

If you’ve not had knotless braids done yet, you totally should. Don’t let 2020 pass without you doing this hair. I can’t overemphasize how much this style is beautiful and actually protects your hair. I gave all the tea on knotless braids here.

Distressed/butterfly locs

This is the trending hairstyle right now and I’m not mad because it’s such a cute hairstyle. Perfect for harmattan season because your hair s locked away.

Passion twists

This was the craze of 2019 but the hair is here to stay. I prefer it over regular Senegalese twists. It’s a really beautiful hairstyle.

Bantu knots

A hairstyle that takes your hair off your shoulders. But this hair is so hard to sleep with. It’s cute though, so if you can forfeit your comfort while sleeping then go ahead.

Feed in Braids

This hairstyle always gives me a Chic vibe. It’s so beautiful when properly done.

Fulani Braids.

Another beautiful hairstyle. It’s a half feed in, half box braid hairstyle.

Blogmas Day 3|Harmattan Essentials

Welcome to blogmas day 3.

Today is my blog anniversary and I didn’t even know till WordPress sent a notification. Well, happy blogversary to me(again, this is not a word).

Dry season is slowly creeping in and harmattan is on it’s way (though northern and eastern parts of Nigeria are already experiencing full blown harmattan). I love harmattan, but we have a love-hate relationship with it. Our love is not all rainbows and unicorns. It comes with it’s downsides of dry skin, dust, chapped lips, dehydration, catarrh, cough etc. So I’m bringing to you a list of things that would help get through the downsides of harmattan.

Water

Water is the first on my list, and you’re probably tired of hearing this, but you need to drink lots of water during the dry season so you don’t get dehydrated. If possible, have your bottle of water with you so you can stay hydrated or else sore throat would come for you, and that’s just one of the many effects of being dehydrated during dry season.

Lip balm/ lip gloss/ Vaseline

Chapped lips are not pleasant, healthy or attractive. Lip balms are very essential to ensure that your lips stay moisturized. For people who wear makeup, lip glosses should be your go to during harmattan because chapped lips are painful, especially when eating anything containing pepper.

Sunglasses

Harmattan comes with a lot of dust and dirt, so sunglasses would help to shield your eyes from the dust. They also add an edgy look to your outfit.

Comfortable clothes

Harmattan is a very confused weather because the mornings are usually cold but in the afternoon, it’s like the sun is out to kill every living thing. It’s best to wear cotton clothes that would keep you warm in the morning, but can adjust to the afternoon heat. I prefer to wear clothes with a jacket so I can take off the jacket in the afternoon.

Face caps

Like I said, the afternoon sun is like it’s out to kill all the inhabitants of the earth, so wearing a face cap would protect your face from the sun, and if also protects your hair from dust.

Shea butter/ body oils

Shea butter has really good moisturizing properties and so is very useful during the dry season. Body creams alone do not keep my skin moisturized enough so I add Shea butter to ensure my skin doesn’t get ashy during the day. If you feel Shea butter is too heavy for your skin, you can make a whipped butter with oils like I did here. Or, you can opt for using just natural oils like olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil or avocado oil.

Hand sanitizers

Since harmattan comes with dust, surfaces of objects would usually be covered in dust and touching of these objects are almost unavoidable. Covid-19 has made almost everybody to own a sanitizer now, so having a hand sanitizer is necessary and comes in handy when you can’t get soap and water to wash your hands at the moment.

Nose masks

Again, thanks to covid, everybody now owns a nose mask. If you’re someone who gets allergies from dust or you get easily irritated, you need to have your nose masks handy for when you’re going out.

These are my harmattan essentials, and they allow me to enjoy my Christmas in peace. What’s your must have item during harmattan?


Guys, the heat in Port Harcourt is not playing with anybody. Sleeping in the afternoon now is a nightmare. The idea of sleeping outside now, sounds so tempting.

Blogmas Day 1: 6 Situations Where You Need To Be Silent.

First of all happy new month!! I’m out here just dropping this without an announcement prior to this post but this introduction should do. I’ve been slacking on creating content for the blog so I wanted to do a one month blogging thing where I’ll try to blog throughout the month of December but then, I came across blogmas posts and decided it would be fun to do that. On that note, my blogmas would be both Christmas and non Christmas related posts.

I’m always so excited in September and December. September because it’s my birth month and it’s the first ’ember’ month, meaning we’re gradually getting to the end of the year. December because we’re in the last month of the year and it’s Christmas. I loved Christmas as a child, and I think I even love it more now.

So we’re finally in the last month of the year and this year 2020 really came to show off. It came in a grand style and I can’t even be mad. But we’re in December and this is the month of ‘cutting off’ toxic behaviours and people. And talking about toxicity, I’m bringing to you, 6 situations where you need to let silence be the answer. Once hurtful words are said, they can’t be taken back you can only be forgiven. But! This is the season of spreading love and positive only.

Be silent when you are angry.

This is the ogapatapata(chief) of all the situations. Personally, I find it hard to express myself when I’m angry so I’ll rather just keep quiet, but the few times when I let anger have the best of me, I’m not so proud of the things I’ve said. Being silent when you’re angry would prevent you from saying unnecessary words which would hurt the recipient. And I sure do hate the excuse ‘I was angry, it didn’t mean anything’ because if you hadn’t been harbouring those thoughts in your heart, they wouldn’t have come out as words.

Be silent when you know nothing about a situation or topic.

Infact, be silent when you do not have all the facts. It’s okay to be quiet, you don’t always have to say something. Don’t go about saying things that you are not sure are true just because you want to feel ‘among’. And most of all, don’t go about saying things you know are not true. Stop spreading lies please.

Be silent if you cannot say it without screaming.

I’m low-key talking to myself, typing this. Who wants a second set of parents that’s not their parents or even their elder shouting at them? Screaming is not necessary, and even arguments can do without them. Screaming just hinders the purpose of the communication.

Be silent if your words will offend a person.

Just keep quiet. You mustn’t say that thing. Even if it’s the truth, you can say it in a non offensive way. Let’s take people’s feelings into consideration before going ahead to spit out everything in our head. But if someone was rude to you, bro! sis! Give it back to that person. You have all the right to change it for the rude fellow.

Be silent if your words could damage a friendship.

Especially if that friendship is not worth losing, be silent. It doesn’t cost much to be silent. Just swallow back the words. It’s certainly not so easy most of the time, but it’s worth it.

Be silent when you’re feeling critical.

We’re the generation of wanting to say things as it is, but that doesn’t mean we should be so rude about it. If you need to criticize somebody’s work or behaviour, do it from a place of good and not jealousy or bluntness. Especially when the person you’re criticising just needs a friend or someone to encourage him or her to do better. You can be critical without sounding judgemental, but if you can’t do that, just stay silent.

The Small Habits

I remember hearing this a lot as a child, and growing up I always say to myself “the little things matter”, and truly, the little things matter.

It’s the small habits we have that make a whole difference and most times these are taken for granted. These small habits, when cultivated correctly, brings growth.

How you spend your mornings.

Mornings are a very vital part of the day. If you have a bad start in the morning, except you make up your mind not to make it affect you, it may hinder the plans made for that day. Your morning can make or break your day. Do you wake up on a positive note every morning?

How you talk to yourself

The biggest of them all. It’s good to be kind to others, but it’s more important to be kind to yourself. You can’t our from an empty cup. It’s important that we learn to speak kind words to ourselves. Most times we our own biggest critics and if not careful, you can criticize yourself into problems. Speak positive words to yourself. This is why I love affirmations so much because I’m speaking good things into my life. Let’s stop being toxic to ourselves by speaking negativity into our lives.

Who has access to you.

Surround yourself with people who share the same energy with you. Pour into their lives as they pour into yours. It’s time to start rewarding inconsistency with unavailability. Don’t let nobody save you for later. And, it’s okay to say no.

My Morning Routine For A Productive Day

You’ll agree with me that your morning can make or break your day. It determines whether you’ll have a productive day or a ‘meh’ day. Even if I’m staying at home, I like to feel useful to myself. I’ll be sharing how I start my day for a productive day.

Start early

I know I’m not the only person that feels like 24hours is not enough time for a day sometimes. So in order to get a lot of things done when I have a lot of things to do, I wake up early. This is step 1 in making sure you have a productive day. Starting early may not even necessarily mean waking up by 5am. You can decide to wake up by 12pm or even 1pm, depending on what your routine is like.

Start my day with gratitude and speak into my day.

You should know that it’s not everybody who had the opportunity to see a new day, and when you do, you should be grateful. I start my day with prayers of gratitude then go ahead to read my devotional; Wisdom for the day by Dr. Bishop Mike Okonkwo. After this I listen to my worship playlist or praise depending on my mood, but it’s worship for me 70% of the time. I then continue my other activities listening to the songs.

Giving my day direction.

The next step is to plan my day. Most times this is done in the night, but when I wake up in the morning I then decide what I would add or subtract from what I decided in the night.

Put my plans on paper.

After planning, I go ahead to write it down in my notebook. Sometimes I use my phone, but that’s only if I have errands to run. Since I started writing my plans down, it has made all the difference. Writing it down helps to hold you accountable so that you actually get the work done so you can strike it off your list.

Organizing myself.

After writing down my plans, I organize myself and put things in order for the day. Obviously, I start with my room because that’s where my day would take place, my room is my office. After arranging my room, I go ahead to do other house chores which I have to do for that day. If I’m going out later in the day, I organize my things for them to be ready. When things are chaotic around you or in your life, there are chances that you won’t get a lot done.

Have breakfast.

I can’t function without breakfast and that’s on period. If I’m not fasting, I don’t joke with my breakfast. When I know that I have a lot of things to do, I always eat very well in the morning. I’m not a light eater in the morning. I love to eat to my satisfaction in the morning and save the light eating for evening and night. Of course, this part changes when I’m in school.

So these are the basic things I do every morning for a productive day. If my day is not going to be productive, I’ll know from when I wake up. Lazy days are still my best days, but I like to feel productive if not I’ll start feeling guilty for wasting my day.
