Green tea for skin care

Today we’re dabbling into skin care again. From my last skin care post on kaolin clay I mentioned that I used green tea in my kaolin mask so I decided to do a whole post on it.

Green tea is a very popular drink for a healthy lifestyle. It has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

It’s rich in antioxidants, catechins, vitamin B2, vitamin C, vitamin E, polyphenols, caffeine and tannins. All these play roles in having a healthy looking skin.

Benefits of green tea for skin care

1.) Green tea helps to reduce excess oil. The polyphenols in green tea help reduce sebum secretion which will stop excessive oil production.

2.) Treats acne: the antibacterial and antimicrobial properties helps to treat acne and unclog the skin pores for a clear and smooth skin. The polyphenols also fight acne by damaging bacterial membranes and fighting against infection which causes acne.

3.) Hydrates and moisturizes skin: the vitamin E in green tea is an intense hydrator which leaves the skin soft and nourished. This hydrating component helps reduce redness and soothes the skin. Vitamin E also supports new cell growth.

4.) Treats puffy eyes and dark circles: the caffeine and tannins in green tea help shrink the blood vessels around the eyes which reduce puffy eyes and dark circles.

5.) Green tea has vitamin C which brightens skin complexion and encourages healing.

6.) Green tea has vitamin B which maintains collagen levels for youthful skin structure and firmness.

There are different ways you can use green tea for your skin. Personally, I use it as a face toner, and sometimes as part of my face mask.

  • Honey

Method of preparation

1.) Brew green tea for just 30 seconds because we still want the properties in the leaves.

2.) Open the bag and bring out the leaves then mix with honey to make a paste.

I usually eyeball my measurements so I use as much or as little as I seem fit.

How to use

Apply on freshly cleansed face and leave for 30 minutes then rinse off with cold water. Then follow up with your skin routine.
